UK Travel Rules for EU Citizens in 2026

Planning to travel from Spain (or any other EU country) to the UK in 2026? With Brexit changes, new visa rules, the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), and updates to border checks and healthcare, entering the UK can feel confusing.

Don’t worry—this guide covers everything EU citizens need to know before travelling to the UK — with practical, easy-to-follow advice updated for 2026.

1. Do EU Citizens Need a Visa to Enter the UK?

For most short stays (tourism, business, or family visits up to 6 months), EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens do not need a visa.

Key points:

✅ Stay up to 6 months without a visa.
✅ No work or long-term study without the appropriate visa.
✅ Planning to stay longer? You’ll need a residence permit or a work or study visa.

2. How Long Can You Stay in the UK?

EU travellers can stay up to 6 months without a visa, but a few things will make your entry smoother:

Bring proof of your return journey (ticket, reservation, etc.)
Have proof of accommodation ready (hotel booking, invitation, etc.)
Be prepared to answer border control questions about your trip

Unlike the Schengen 90/180 rule, the UK does not have a cumulative stay limit, but overstaying can affect future travel.

3. Passport & Entry Requirements for EU Citizens

Your passport must:

✅ Be valid for the duration of your entire stay in the UK.
✅ Not expired or damaged.

⚠️ Important: EU national ID cards are no longer accepted. As of 2026, the UK does not accept national identity cards as a valid entry document. You must travel with a valid passport — regardless of which EU country you’re from.

4. UK ETA: What You Need to Know

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) has been mandatory since 25 February 2026. Without one, you will not be able to board your flight, ferry, or Eurostar train — airlines and carriers are required to verify ETA status before allowing boarding.

Here’s what you need to know:

⭐ An online application is required for all visa-exempt travellers — including children and babies
⭐ Non-refundable Fee: £16 (rising to £20 from 8 April 2026)
⭐ Approval must be granted before you travel
⭐ Valid for 2 years (or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner) — covers unlimited trips of up to 6 months each
⭐ Apply at least 3 working days before travel

You’ll need:
✅ Passport
✅ Email address
✅ Payment method (credit/debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay)

Note: Irish citizens do not need an ETA due to the Common Travel Area agreement with the UK.

Border control is standard, but here’s the quick rundown:

6. For EU Citizens Living in the UK

If you’re an EU citizen living in the UK, things are slightly different:

Visa? Nope! If you have a settled or pre-settled status, you don’t need a visa.

Documents to carry:

✅ EU passport
✅ Proof of your settled/pre-settled status (letter or online document from the UK Home Office)

Time away: You can be outside the UK for up to 5 years while retaining settled status (2 years if you have the pre-settle status). Longer than that? You might lose your right to live in the UK.

Healthcare: NHS coverage still applies. Carry your EHIC or GHIC card just in case.
